Sunrise at Saqqara, and all is well on the necropolis. It is, as usual, silent, peaceful and still out here in the desert. Last Tuesday, however, the serenity and divinity were broken by the arrival of an American-Japanese scientific mission to carry out a laser scanning survey of Djoser's Step Pyramid. At the footsteps of the pyramid were gathered dozens of people, from scientists to technicians, archaeologists and restorers to workmen, all there to witness the first ever endeavour to document, in detail, the present condition of the great and distinctive monument using a high-tech laser device in an attempt to create a virtual three-dimensional model of Egypt's oldest pyramid complex. Carried on the backs of three professional climbers as they grappled to descend all four faces of the pyramid's six gigantic steps, the Zoser Scanner, a device created specially for the purpose, records data at the exceedingly fast rate of 40,000 points per second using infrared signals to gather coordinates and elevations of thousands of points on the monument. Africans in general and Fulani in particular are strongly attached to the idea of ancestors. With a deep hunger to know their heritage, they cherish their ancestry to the point of divinizing. The ancestors are seen as the link between the past and present, the vehicle between here and infinity and the holder of all that is learned. During conflicts, the wisdom of the ancestors is sought after to bring back peace. During periods of hardship, the acumen of ancestors is invoked to bring back abundance. Ancestors teach practical ways of transforming difficulties into endless possibilities, of fulfilling the purpose of life, and of showing the way to happiness and peace.
The living wisdom of African peoples is practical, feet-on-the-ground, and concrete. It's a beautiful and simple philosophy |  |

ALOK, Nigeria (AFP) — For the past couple of years, these mysterious circles of carved stone figures, which villagers in southern Nigeria still worship on occasion, have been causing a frenzy of excitement here. Newspapers have trumpeted the Ikom monoliths - phallic-shaped pieces of volcanic rock largely ignored for centuries - as being remnants of a glorious civilization made up in equal parts of Ancient Egypt and the Old Testament.
